Take aways
  • Treat your learners like a customer: Commit to creating compelling content that's worth their time.  Satisfied customers will evangelize your services!

DonorsChoose

As part of my own personal development I'm donating one dollar for every filler word I speak in an episode. I tried this out with my last public speaking event and ended up closing one DonorsChoose project and supporting another work towards completion.

This episode helped to complete
Calculate to Educate, a project by Mrs. Smith.

"Most of my students have learning disabilities, and are reading below grade level. For this reason they are in inclusion classes that are co-taught by both the regular education teacher and myself, the learning support teacher. We are allotted 3 enrichment class periods a week to work on the skills that they need extra work with."

This is such a strong reminder that training isn’t just about delivering information — it’s about *earning attention*.

The idea of treating learners like customers really stands out. It shifts the mindset from “we have to teach this” to “why would someone actually care about this?” That’s a completely different level of accountability. If the content isn’t engaging or valuable, people won’t buy in — just like any other product.

I also love the emphasis on data and feedback. It’s easy to assume something is working because it *should* work, but actually measuring impact (and being open to what the data says) is where real improvement happens. That takes a bit of humility, but it’s what separates good programs from great ones.

The point about marketing training is underrated too. So often, great learning resources exist… and no one knows about them. Thinking of training as something that needs visibility and ongoing promotion makes a lot of sense — especially in larger organizations where attention is limited.

And maybe the most important takeaway: training isn’t always the solution. That’s a tough one to admit, but it’s true. If a product is confusing or overly complex, no amount of training will fully fix that. Sometimes the real answer is simplifying the system itself.

Also, the DonorsChoose initiative is a great touch. Turning personal development into something that directly supports classrooms adds a meaningful layer to the whole effort — especially for projects like “Calculate to Educate,” where resources can make a real difference.

Overall, this feels like a more modern, thoughtful approach to learning — one that values engagement, feedback, and impact over just checking a box.

This really reframes training in a way that feels much more aligned with how people actually learn today.

Calling someone an “evangelist for training” isn’t about pushing more content — it’s about creating something people *want* to engage with and even share. That shift from obligation to interest is huge. When learners start advocating for your programs, you know you’ve built something that resonates.

The customer mindset is probably the strongest takeaway here. It forces you to ask better questions: Is this useful? Is it clear? Is it worth their time? Because if the answer is no, no amount of delivery will fix that.

I also appreciate the honesty in saying that training isn’t always the answer. That’s a perspective you don’t hear often enough. Sometimes the issue isn’t that people need more information — it’s that the system itself needs to be improved. Recognizing that takes a broader, more strategic view of learning.

And the idea of marketing training is spot on. Great content doesn’t matter if no one sees it or understands its value. Treating learning like a product that needs visibility, storytelling, and momentum makes a lot of sense.

The DonorsChoose piece adds a really meaningful dimension too. It connects personal growth with real-world impact, which is a powerful way to stay motivated and grounded.

Overall, this feels less like a checklist of tips and more like a mindset shift — from delivering training to *designing experiences people actually care about*.
